Happy New Year! It’s a new year and typically the time that people set new goals – health, career, and relationship seem to be top of mind for many. New year, new goals.
It’s great to set goals for yourself, but be gentle. Change doesn’t happen immediately and often if you try to make changes too quickly they won’t stick. Set yourself up for success – tweak a few small things now and keep making small changes throughout the year until you’ve reached your goal.
Here are a few simple tips that you can implement now to help make your year a great one:
Start your day with a glass of warm lemon water
A glass of warm water with a squeeze of fresh lemon is great way to start the day. Why?
- Hydration – After several hours of sleep, when you are not consuming any water, a glass of water in the morning helps to rehydrate your body.
- Immune Function – Lemon juice contains Vitamin C which is an antioxidant(1), is great for healthy skin (2) and supports immune function(3) (that’s why so many reach for Vitamin C when they have a cold).
- Digestion – Lemon juice helps stimulate stomach acid production which in turn helps with digestion of the food you eat and assimilation of nutrients.
Take some time each day to focus on the positive
We live in a busy world where we are inundated with project lists & tasks, and don’t often take time to really focus on the good in our lives. Take a few moments each day to remember all of the positives, the things you are grateful for. Jot them down and look back at your notes when you need a lift.
The Five Minute Journal is a great tool to get you started, or keep a small notebook beside your bed so you can start your day on a positive note.
Learn more about yourself
Figure out what motivates you. Do you respond well to the expectations of others? Are you better left alone to set your own expectations? The Four Tendencies quiz from Gretchen Rubin can provide some great insight. I learned that I’m more of an Obliger which means having an accountability partner is going to help me meet my goals for 2016.
I’d love to hear what your goals for the year are and how you plan to reach them. Share with me in the comments.
